Without engine oil, your engine wouldn’t last very long at all. The engine includes numerous moving metal components, and these need to be lubricated. Engine oil is what provides this vital lubrication. Without it, the parts would either seize or overheat, becoming irreversibly damaged. However, oil doesn’t last forever. The engine’s high operating temperature will eventually begin to break the oil down, making it less effective as a lubricant. Not only does this increase the chances that your engine will become damaged, but old oil can also deposit sludge in the engine, further damaging it. Because of this, the oil needs to be regularly drained and replaced with new oil. While this is being done, the oil filter (which filters out impurities in the oil that could harm the engine) should also be replaced.
The time-honored standard is that you should have your oil changed about every 3,000 miles. In recent years, this standard has been challenged, as engines have become more advanced, and synthetic oil has become more commonplace. However, if you use conventional oil, the 3,000-mile rule is still a good one to follow.
We recommend using synthetic oil for your Toyota. It’s longer-lasting and can help keep your engine cleaner for better overall performance. However, conventional oil is more affordable. If you choose to go with conventional, just be sure to have your oil changed frequently enough.
